The Flyest Honeys (and Guys)

A site called misstravel.com polled 31,000 American women and 13,000 American men to determine the top 10 “sexiest” nationalities according to Gringos. Here are the results.

Brazilians place pretty high on both lists, while Americans, Spaniards, Swedes, and the French make appearances on both lists. I gotta say I agree with my brethren on Colombian women being in first place. Sofia Vergara alone is an epic super mega-babe to the third power who is still all kindsa fine even at 40 with a grown-up son. Sorry Mexicans, in my heart you are #1.

Global Rich List

Cool. This site tells you how wealthy you are compared to every other person on the planet. For example, if you earn the median per capita U.S. income of just over $27,500, you’re in the top 1.4% of the richest people in the world. Likewise, if you earn minimum wage in the U.S. ($7.25/hour), you’re still in the top 7% of the richest people in the world.

Find out how you stack up against everyone else by clicking the title above or the link here. You’ll see, you’re much better off than you think.

It Wasn’t the Butler

Have you ever thought about what the major causes of death were during the 20th century? Of course you haven’t! Why would you? That’s just weird. Well, I have. And guess what? It wasn’t the butler!

Some weirdo uploaded a public spreadsheet (link below) onto Google Docs that shows estimates of what these causes were. Check out the summary:

So, overall, disease is enemy #1, and will probably continue to be so during the 21st century. I expected war to be higher, but I guess that’s just one of the many misconceptions we have over things we don’t bother to learn about.

The Glass-Ceiling Index
Are you a woman? Are you tired of not being treated as the better half you’re told you are? Well, fear not my Lifetime watching friend.
There are places in the world, as this graph from The Economist shows, that are close to achieving gender equality, at least for women in the workforce.
South Korea and Japan are just pitiful. They may lead the world technologywise, but are sadly lagging in gender equality.

Yup. If you’re normal, you hate your commute to and from work. That’s because for most of us it means 25.4 minutes of having to share the road with all kinds of morons. It could be worse though. Some poor schmoes commute for upwards of 50 minutes, twice a day, 5 days a week. Yikes!

What’s in a Surname? (by National Geographic)

The U.S. is a nation of Immigrants who come from all over the world. Along with the diversity of people, we see great diversity of surnames. This map shows the most common surnames by geographical location in the U.S. The color of the names indicates where they’re from (blue is English, red is Spanish). Smith still rules, but for how long?

The ABCs of the World
Before I saw this map I could only think of 7 writing systems used in different parts of the world. However, as this map shows, there are a lot more, especially in Eastern Asia.
It’s no wonder we have trouble understanding each other.

Meet Ampersand

AmpersandSo that’s what this thing is called. I didn’t know this guy had a name, or that it was included in the alphabet.

From Mental Floss:

Today we just use it for stylistic purposes (and when we’ve run out of space in a text message or tweet), but the ampersand has had a long and storied history in English, and was actually frequently included as a 27th letter of the alphabet as recently as the 19th century.

In fact, it’s because of its placement in the alphabet that it gets its name. Originally, the character was simply called “and” or sometimes “et” (from the Latin word for and, which the ampersand is usually stylistically meant to resemble). However, when teaching children the alphabet, the & was often placed at the end, after Z, and recited as “and per se and,” meaning “and in and of itself” or “and standing on its own.”

So you’d have “w, x, y, z, and, per se, and.” Over time, the last bit morphed into “ampersand,” and it stuck even after we quit teaching it as part of the alphabet.

I now have more respect for the ampersand & will use it more often in my writing.
